Overview:
Over the last few weeks we have been studying about cell division, DNA and the beginnings of genetics. The World Wide Web has many sites with a lot more information than our textbook has or than I can provide you in class. On this WebQuest, you will explore many different topics, preview basic genetics,perform experiments, and learn about the latest discoveries involving chromosomes and cloning.

You must visit and complete the first 4 activities and then you will select 3 of the 7 remaining sites to respond to. Make sure you fill out the Genetics WebQuest Worksheet before you leave today.

Go to the Genetic Science Learning Center - What is Cloning? and Why Clone? read through the information to explain cloning and the reasons behind cloning. Then

Go to the Genetic Science Learning Center - Click and Clone site and follow the directions to create a genetically identical clone of Mimi the mouse. (intermediate)


Explain the steps you took to create a clone of a mouse and explain about the first time this experiment took place.

Go to the Careers in Human Genetics site, read until you find at least 2 careers that sound interesting to you (easy)
List 2 careers on your worksheet and write a few sentences about each one and explain why you might be interested in doing that as a profession after you graduate.
Go to the interactive DNA Extraction site and click start lab. Read along with the interactive lab and click next at the bottom right hand corner to continue. (intermediate)

Go to the Genetic Science Learning Center - Cloning Myths site and read through all the myths about cloning. (easy)

On your worksheet list the name of this site. Which myths did you think were true? Which myths surprised you the most? In Myth #1 explain why a copied clone, if created, would not magically appear at the same age as the original organism?

Whodunit? Help solve a crime through using DNA fingerprinting techniques. go to NOVA Online Be warned, though, this Discovery site is NOT easy! Click DNA Fingerprinting to access the crime scene. (difficult, but interesting)
On your worksheet, list the name of this site. Did you choose the correct culprit? Describe some of the things you learned about how to analyze DNA from doing the lab. List at least 3 different things.
What are chromosomes, anyway? Go to the Human Genome Project to get the basic facts on chromosomes. Click on any number (or letter) in the top menu bar on this page for information. (intermediate)
On your worksheet, list the name of the site and some facts about 4 different chromosomes. (The main page lists the number of bases for each chromosome.) Make sure you put down the number (or letter) of the chromosome you're describing.
Go to the Genetic Science Learning Center - "What is a Mutation?" site and read the section on "What Are Genetic Disorders?" Then go to "The Outcome of Mutation" site and follow the directions listed. (intermediate)
On your worksheet, list the name of the site. Explain what a mutation is and how DNA can fix itself. Then using "The Outcome of Mutation" site choose 3 examples out of the 8 and describe what trait the mutation affects, which species are affected and whether it is a variation, disease or both.

Go to the Genetics Science Learning Center -Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction and read the directions to click the organisms and decide whether they reproduce sexually, asexually or both. (easy)
List the names of the 8 out of 21 organisms and how they reproduce (sexually, asexually or both).
